One of my favorite drinks in the world is the Blueberry-Pomegranate Milkshake that is served at Bobby’s Burger Palace. I love the glorious color, the fruity scent, and the creamy texture -- it’s so thick that you have to use an extra-wide straw to drink it! I wish I could drink one every day. So I decided to do an experiment: Could I take my favorite milkshake and make a wholesome version of it, with a similar flavor profile and texture, that’s healthy enough to drink on the regular?

To start, I replaced thick, rich (and fattening) vanilla ice cream with oats, a frozen banana and Greek yogurt. The trio mimic the creaminess of ice cream, but without all the fat (and with some fiber, too!). Frozen organic blueberries, pomegranate molasses and pomegranate juice create the flavor and sweetness and that magnificent color. I added flaxseed for good measure and bonus fiber points. The result? My smoothie looks exactly like my beloved milkshake -- but looks can be deceiving, because it has none of the fat, less than half of the calories, and lots of protein, fiber and antioxidants!
It’s so good, that I may never drink another BBP milkshake again… Ummm, yeah, that isn’t going to happen…but the baby steps to clean eating are tasting pretty good so far!
