A few weeks ago, we decided to give FlyBarre a try. We arrived at FlyBarre’s Flatiron location on 21st Street in Manhattan dressed in our workout clothes and ready for the challenge… Or were we?
For those of you who are not familiar with FlyBarre, it’s a total body sculpting class that blends the best of light weight training, dance, and core strengthening. It is all about small intense interval exercises choreographed to inspiring music. FlyBarre quickly reshapes the body for lean, strong, and elongated muscles, and it is probably one of the hardest workouts we have done in a long time (and we work out a lot!)
We entered the studio where our instructor, Khori Petinaud (whose other job is an ensemble dancer in the Broadway musical production of Disney's Aladdin, and who has one of the most amazingly fit bodies we have ever seen not to mention a smile that could light up all of Manhattan during a power outage) proceeded to kick our butts for the next 45 minutes. Khori’s class utilizes a number of tools to help get every muscle into shape – resistance bands, small weights and a ballet barre (hence the barre in FlyBarre).
Khori’s class is highly energetic, fast-paced, and fun filled. Her selection of music, along with her words of encouragement help to keep you motivated for the entire class. It doesn’t matter how fit you are, it will be hard to keep up the first time you take FlyBarre because of the high number of reps that you will do (we suggest using the lightest weights available for the first few classes.) We were both sore for several days after taking the class (which means that we got a great workout!)
We loved every minute (ok, maybe not every minute….those leg lifts are NO fun) of Khori’s class and …we can’t wait to take Fly Barre again. The next time…maybe Bobby will join us!
Classes start at $34. For more information and studio locations across the country, visit www.flywheelsports.com.
