Virtuous Ice Cream! (Well, Kind Of)

April 24, 2014 | Posted by Charlotte March

Charlotte March here, reporting from the West Coast with good news for sweet fiends! Now you can enjoy ice cream and the benefits of eating your daily requirement of vegetables at very the same time; or at least that’s what I told myself as I plowed through my second scoop of Humphrey Slocombe's fennel and brown sugar ice cream.

This trend, or whatever you want to call it, is something I can definitely get behind. Humphrey Slocombe has been a pioneer in this field, offering flavors like candy cap mushroom or beet. As I continued my virtuous dessert quest, I stopped in at Mitchell’s Ice Cream, a San Francisco institution located in the Mission District, and sampled their avocado-flavored ice cream. Its super creamy texture and mild vegetal flavor is oddly addicting. I think I may have found my next vice.

If you thought I was done there, think again! Next up on my list, when I can find the time to brave the never-ending line, is a scoop of ginger at Bi-Rite Creamery.
