Have you seen many out of shape boxers? I haven’t. So, a few weeks ago, I, along with my colleague and fellow B-Teamer, Elyse, headed over to Title Boxing Club located in Hell’s Kitchen to take a boxing class and what we got.well,.pardon the pun…was one Hell of a workout!
Of all sports, boxing is one of the most physically demanding. It requires a blend of power, speed, balance and focus combined with excellent overall conditioning that results in a body that is lean and sculpted. .
Mike Tosto (above) the owner of the 37th Street location showed us around the club and explained the class. He showed us how to properly wrap our hands before putting on the gloves. (boxers wrap their hands in a thin band that protects the tendons and muscles and lends additional support to the movements of the wrist)…We chose our bag and waited for the class to begin…
Our instructor (above) the incredibly fit Nate introduced himself, welcomed first-timers and asked if anyone had any injuries he should know about..…then the music started to play (loudly) and the warm-up began…a 15-minute series of old-school calisthenics: jumping jacks, high knees, push-ups, squats,mountain climbers, burpees and lunges…repeated over and over and over (and over) again…who knew 15 minutes could feel so long. We got a sixty second break to get a drink of water and I said quick prayer that I would survive the rest of the class. Then it was time to put on the gloves…I admit it..the minute the gloves were on..I felt empowered and quietly began humming The Theme From Rocky, under my breath. I was ready to go! Bring it on! Nate wasted no time and soon began barking out punching combinations, Jab, jab, jab. Jab cross. Jab cross hook. Jab, cross, hook, uppercut..Oy! As Nate continued calling out the combinations, he worked the room, correcting our form (hands up..elbows in..protect your face) and giving us words of encouragement (nice right hook!)
With sweat dripping down my back and off my face, I paused occasionally to catch my breath and skipped the jumping jacks to run, well, jog..make that walk.. in place. This workout is no joke!
I glanced to my left and was secretly happy to see that Elyse was out of breath too! Thirty minutes had flown by and we had both beaten the crap out of our bags and felt as we had gone the distance with Ali himself..The last 15 minutes of the class is dedicated to gut busting ab work and much needed stretching.

I can't say enough about how great this workout is....I loved the class so much that I joined the club a few days later and now take the class several times a week. In addition to Nate's class, I have been religiously taking Joe's class (above) too... His energy is infectious!
